MPP Stands Against Hydro Distribution Rate Increase

Hydro One has applied for an increase in hydro distribution rates and one MPP is saying enough's enough.

Hydro One recently applied for an increase in hydro distribution rates and Conservative Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman is not impressed.

If granted by the Ontario Energy Board the increase would be phased in over five years. Hardeman says some Ontarians already have to decide if they want to keep their lights on or put food on the table.

Hardeman and PC Leader Patrick Brown are calling on the Liberals to put a stop to this application.

"The government is saying, 'Oh well it's Hydro One that's applying for it and the Energy Board gets to make the decision.' Well they told us when they sold 60 percent of Hydro that they still control it, so it seems to me that they can still stop Hydro from applying."

By voicing the opinions of the public, he hopes he can get the Premier's attention.

"I can't make government do anything but I think if we voice the concerns of the people of Ontario I would hope the Premier would decide that maybe this wasn't the right thing to do and maybe she would back track on it and say, 'This isn't a time for an increase in hydro, in fact this definitely is a time where we should be looking at reducing the cost of hydro."

Ontarians can apply to have their opinions heard by the Ontario Energy Board, the deadline is June 14th.
