New Cellphone Code Limits Contracts, Roaming Fees

The C-R-T-C has unveiled a new code of conduct for cellphone companies that caps extra data and roaming charges -- and lets customers cancel three-year contracts early without penalty. The broadcast regulator announced the new rules today after hearing a litany of complaints from consumers -- much of it centring around the three-year contracts offered by wireless carriers. Under the changes that take effect in early December, customers will be able to cancel those contracts after two years at no charge. Extra data charges will also be capped at 50-dollars a month, and international data roaming charges at 100-dollars a month to avoid huge, surprise bills.
