Officers from Oxford Honoured to Help With Special Olympics

An Oxford OPP Constable and Woodstock Police Auxiliary Sergeant had an amazing weekend helping out at the Special Olympics Ontario.

GUELPH - Oxford County was well represented at the Special Olympics Ontario in Guelph.

OPP Constable Stacey Culbert and Woodstock Police Auxiliary Sergeant Deb Klemp joined in on the festivities.

Culbert says they were able to take part in the Final Leg Torch Run to kick things off.

"So we were able to participate in the parade which is also known as the Final Leg. So we had over 200 law enforcement personnel who were running into the opening ceremony for the games and it was unbelievable. It was an amazing experience."

A Woodstock Police Cruiser was part of the procession escorting the run.

Culbert says they were honoured to be able to hand out the gold, silver, and bronze medals for swimming.

"You can't walk out of there without catching the spirit. These athletes have worked hard all year to qualify for these tournaments. A few tears shed - happy tears. They're just so excited. And a lot of high fives, I think we both must have done over 5,000 high fives over the weekend. It's a pretty neat experience."

And of course, Oxford County was well represented in the games as well. Culbert says she and Klemp were sure to catch up with an athlete from Tillsonburg.

"We didn't actually get to see her participate in her event, but we got to meet up and chat with her at one of the ceremonies and she was just really, really excited. She was going to be qualifying on Sunday so we're just waiting to hear back on how she did. But I'm sure it was a very long, and exciting, and draining weekend."
