A Norfolk County resident lost over $5000 last Friday, after receiving a scam phone call claiming that a family member was in prison and the money was needed for bail.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Norfolk County OPP is investigating an incident after a concerned resident contacted them reporting a fraud.
The resident reported the incident on November 23rd after receiving a phone call from a man claiming to be a lawyer.
He had told the homeowner that their grandson was in prison at the time, after being involved in a motor collision, and $5,000 was needed for the grandson's bail.
The resident withdrew the requested funds and forwarded them to the man. Police also discovered in a separate incident that the unknown man requested an additional $1,000 from another family.
Police would like to take this opportunity to remind all Norfolk County residents to remain extremely vigilant and alert for unsolicited phone calls, emails, fax messages, or house visits asking for money.
Modern tech savvy scammers are able to procure personal information about people before they attempt to contact them. It is imperative to verify any unsolicited contact before responding and providing information. Keep your guard up if and when you receive a surprise call from anyone soliciting funds and claiming that a loved one is in jail or have been involved in a serious incident.
If someone is to be contacted in this manner, they are advised to speak with a family member, and never forward any funds without consulting a family member first.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Norfolk OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
