Be sure to never share your personal info over the phone or online, unless you're using a secure website or you're certain you know who you're talking to.

NORFOLK - With the holiday season just around the corner, the Norfolk County OPP wants to help keep the public safe from identity theft and other fraudulent crimes often seen by giving out some helpful tips.

Imposters will try to steal a person's name, credit card information, and social insurance number. Police urge you to never give out your personal information over the phone or online, unless you're making a secure transaction or you're certain you know who you're talking to.

Always make sure the websites you put your personal info on are safe and secure by checking the lock symbol on the upper search bar. If it's locked and green, then your info's clean.  And of course, it's always a good idea to change your passwords on the regular. Be sure to use a combo of letters and numbers to make it hard to guess, and never share it with anyone.

Identity theft is a crime, and if you or someone you know think that you've been a victim, be sure to contact OPP or Crime Stoppers so they can investigate it.
