Oxford County Public Health is asking residents to be more careful and plan ahead to stay safe.
OXFORD COUNTY - The message is clear: more action needs to be taken to stop preventable injuries.
A report from Parachute Canada shows preventable injuries are the number one killer of people under the age of 45, killing 43 people every day.
The report doesn't look good for Oxford County. Public Health Nurse Lorna Boratto says the numbers in the county are discouraging, "Unfortunately our numbers of hospitalizations and ER visits are higher than the provincial rate. Why that is, I really don't know, but yes we do. And most injuries are due to falls."
Boratto says if we just stop and think before we act, we might be able to save ourselves a lot of grief later on. "All of us need to work together to look ahead to increase the safety in what we do. Injury has long term effects and quite often it can lead to chronic pain, huge impacts on the family. And everyone needs to do everything we can to prevent an injury."
The term 'preventable injury' covers a wide range of causes: everything from driving a car, to playing sports, to accidental workplace accidents, and incidents around the home. Boratto says there is no reason to stop doing the activities we love, we just need to be more careful about how we do them.
If things don't turn around soon, Parachute estimates the national cost of these injuries will raise from $27 billion to $35 billion
