Bill 5, or the Stopping Harassment and Abuse by Local Leaders Act, was brought forward by MPP Stephen Blais in 2022 and has gained municipal support across Ontario. It is a private members bill that grants more authority to Integrity Commissioners.
Councilor Wheaton, who was at the press conference on Monday May 8th, explained that there needs to be something put in place to make sure people are held accountable.
"We need to have a mechanism to protect our staff from the behaviors of counselors."
To date, there are 83 municipalities in Ontario that support and enforce Bill 5.
