Oxford County Archives has launched its Animals in Archives online exhibit in honour of National Archives Awareness Week.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Archives has released a new online exhibit all about our furry friends.
Inspired by National Archives Awareness Week and National Pet Day, Archive Technician Megan Lockhart says the county is merging those two events for a new permanent display.
"We honestly have hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of photographs that were actually taken by local newspapers years ago featuring animals, people with their pets, (and) people working on farms with animals."
Lockhart highlighted one example, Farmer the First Fire Horse in the area, who served on the fire brigade in Woodstock back in 1886.
"Farmer is kind of a historical celebrity in Woodstock and he was serving on the fire brigade for 17 years before he retired. After that, there were just generations upon generations of fire horses that assisted the fire brigade until they moved on to automobiles."
The exhibit is free and can be found online here.
