Oxford County Library Is Hosting A Virtual Summer Reading Club

The program goes every Wednesday, which started this week and it is free to register.

WOODSTOCK - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oxford County Library has decided to do a virtual summer reading club for kids.

There are two parts to the program; One of the parts is the online platform where they can register and keep track of their progress.

Branch Services Librarian, Cristina McLaren says they wanted to offer something to children and families where they could keep reading and build their literacy skills.

"We already know that there is a summer slide when kids are off school for the summer and don't do any reading for those two months. So whatever we can do to help kids build up their literacy skills is our focus."

The second part is a virtual program that coincides with the reading club that's held every Wednesday on their Facebook page. Staff can be seen in videos every Wednesday afternoon, which shows them doing crafts and a story time program.

McLaren adds staff puts on a bit of show to entertain families and children, talking about the various activities through the week.

The program goes every Wednesday, which started this week and it is free to register.

She says she hopes the program can engage children and families.

"We still have lots of new books coming in, lots of picture books and chapter books and all that kind of stuff. And more than just books of course, we have DVD's as well. So people can still check out all those items through many of our branches. We have 14 branches within the system and while they're not all open, many of them are open for curbside services, so there's still that access to the print materials."

You can go here to learn more and register for the program.
