Oxford County Makes 100% Renewable Energy Commitment

By 2050 Oxford County hopes to be running solely on renewable energy.

WOODSTOCK - By the year 2050 Oxford County will run solely on renewable energy.

County Councillors made the unanimous decision at council last night, making Oxford the first municipality in the province to make this commitment. County Councillor and Mayor of Woodstock Trevor Birtch brought this motion forward. "I'm very excited, and the next step is going to be setting up various committees with citizen appointees to first of all, see where we are at, and where we need to get to, and bite off one year at a time."

"One of the key objectives has been diminishing our use of fossil fuels and to look for the synergies on where we can find more efficiency," says Birtch, "And eventually adopt the new technology to replace our reliance on fossil fuels and the hydro grid." A few ways to reach these goals has already been discussed; low carbon transportation and green construction.

Over the next 35 years, Oxford County will make changes to achieve this lofty goal. Mayor Birtch believes Oxford County is the best fit for this kind of endeavour. "I think we have had a great history both in the city and the county especially in our rural community. We have a lot of great agricultural entrepreneurs that have adopted technology; it's much nicer to see a bio-digester in action at a farm facility than it is in a research facility at a university."
