Oxford Resident Loses Thousands in Romance Scam

A resident from Oxford gave $5,000 to a stranger she had developed a relationship with online.

TILLSONBURG - An Oxford County resident is out $5,000 after falling victim to a romance scam.

Police say the woman developed an online relationship with the suspect, then they asked for $5,000 for a flight home.  The victim sent the money.  Once the suspect asked for more money, that's when a relative of the victim encouraged the suspect to call the police.

Police are warning the public to be wary of online romance scams, as they often involve deception. Single and unattached individuals are typically the targets, and this particular scam has been successful with numerous people.

Tips to Avoid Being a Victim of a Romance / Dating Scam:

- Check website addresses carefully. Scammers often set up fake websites with addresses that are very similar to those of legitimate dating websites. Make sure you only use legitimate and reputable dating websites.

- Never send money, or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust.  A request to send money to a foreign country (using Western Union or MoneyGram) to this person you have never personally met should be a red flag.

- Don’t give out any personal information in an email or when you are chatting online. Like any scam, use your computer to your advantage.  Educate yourself.  Check the person’s name, the company name the addresses used, and ask yourself, “Would this be normal?”

If you think you have become a victim of fraud, please don't be embarrassed. Please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
