It's the 25th anniversary of the dragon boat festival at the Pittock Conservation Area.
WOODSTOCK - The Pharmasave Woodstock Dragon Boat Festival is less than three weeks away!
The popular event will be taking place on the north shore of the Pittock Conservation Area on August 8th. The racing will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..
Dave Harris, a Member of the Woodstock Rotary Club, says volunteers are needed.
"We are absolutely still looking for volunteers, so you can go to our website dragonboatwoodstock.ca. It's a fun day, and we are looking for a lot of people to help at the docks. Teenagers looking for hours for school, it is a great opportunity to get some hours and spend the day outside. You will get a volunteer shirt and some food, and then people just to help with organization."
33 teams have registered, with some local and others travelling from out of town. Spectators will be able to witness all of the action for free.
The event is hosted by the Woodstock Rotary Club, which supports charities in Oxford County and beyond. Harris provides a preview on what one can expect.
"It is a full day of exciting on-water activity and a lot of fun for the community to see the teams. Come see the pre-race rituals they go through, the loading and unloading of the boats. You can watch these guys paddle 500 metres in 40-foot boats, 20 paddlers, there is a drummer, and it is all about teamwork."
The Rotary Club has also pledged to donate $17,000 per year over the next several years to the new Community Kitchen at South Gate Centre. It also funds a Dragon Boat scholarship for young athletes who make the national team.
