Phishing Scam Through Text Message

Scam artists are posing as banks and financial institutions in an attempt to trick you out of your hard earned money.

OPP are warning the public to ignore any text messages claiming to be from your bank or financial institution.

One scam in the region has people getting texts claiming to be from their financial institution and that their bank accounts have been suspended. The text will ask you to click on a link in order to unlock your account.

Recently a person from Norfolk County fell victim to this scam. The link took them to a series of questions asking personal information like date of birth, banking account number, on-line pin four security questions.

OPP are reminding all Norfolk County residents to be aware if they should receive any fake e-mails or text messages. The messages contain links to fraudulent websites that look as if they come from a legitimate financial institution. These messages may be from online fraudsters "phishing" for your personal information to gain access to your finances or commit other crimes in your name.

March also happens to be Fraud Prevention Month.
