Pilot Project Delivers Fruit and Veggies to Oxford County Schools

A new pilot program in Oxford County is allowing schools access to local fresh food.

OXFORD COUNTY - A new eight week pilot project starts today in 20 schools across Oxford County.

The delivery project is part of the Ontario Student Nutrition Program and will allow local schools to see three to four fresh fruit and vegetable options delivered weekly to their doorstep.

Registered Dietician, Jessica Jansen, explains how the schools select the fruits and vegetables.

"There was a set menu that was distributed earlier on in the school year and the coordinators had a chance to select from about five or six different fruits and vegetables each week."

The project aims to increase the variety of what is served to students, save money by purchasing fruit and vegetables in bulk, increase access to local and fresh food and offer an exciting addition to the curriculum that links the food to the farm.

Participating schools will work hand in hand with dieticians from Oxford County Public Health to assist with educational materials, menu planning and recipe ideas.

Jansen hopes to see this project move forward.

"We're just grateful that we have so many great volunteers in our schools. Both the coordinators and all the volunteers to help prepare this food and serve it out to the kids. We are really excited to see the opportunities that this could present moving forward."
