The Norwich Merchants won the Battle of Highway 59 over the weekend, celebrating a 3-2 win over the Woodstock on Friday night and a 6-1 win over the Vets yesterday afternoon.
PJHL - It was a great weekend for the Merchants, but a not-so-great weekend for the Navy Vets.
Woodstock suffered a 3-2 loss to Norwich at Southwood Arena Friday night, with Davin Gray and Brodie Kearns scoring the goals for the Vets.
The two teams had the day off on Saturday, before the Merchants celebrated 6-1 win over the Vets at Nor-Del Arena yesterday afternoon. Jake Phelan scored the lone goal for Woodstock while Tyler Bouck and Graeme Noye finished the game with 36 saves.
Meanwhile, the Tavistock Braves beat the Wellesley Applejacks 3-2 in overtime Friday night, but fell to the Paris Mounties 4-3 in overtime Saturday night.
The New Hamburg Firebirds are currently leading the Doherty Division standings with 55 points. They're followed by the Applejacks with 50 points, the Merchants with 43 points, the Braves with 36 points, the Navy Vets with 27 points, the Hespeler Shamrocks with 11 points, and the Mounties with seven points.
In the Yeck Division, the Thamesford Trojans suffered a 5-1 loss to the Dorchester Dolphins Friday night.
The Trojans are currently tied with the North Middlesex Stars and the Exeter Hawks for second place in the division standings with 42 points each. The Mount Brydges Bulldogs are currently leading the division with 44 points.
