The pontiff issued an apology in Maskwacis, Alberta earlier today, addressing residential school survivors and elders.
He said he feels shame, sorrow and indignation.
About 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend residential schools in Canada, where neglect and physical and sexual abuse were common.
Over 60 percent of the schools were run by the Catholic Church.
