Poppy Boxes

Poppy donation boxes now allowed in MPP offices

TORONTO - A unanimous vote in the Ontario Legislature means you can now purchase a poppy from an MPP's office.

Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman put forth the motion Thursday.

"The interpretation of the Member's Integrity Act was that in fact we should not have poppy boxes in our office for the Poppy Campaign for the Legion and I just thought that was inappropriate so I took that section of the Integrity Act that provides a restriction for having donation boxes in the office, I just eliminated the part that exempted the poppy from being a part of that."

"Some people were already interpreting it that in their mind the poppy was exempt so they did it anyway," continued Hardeman. "It seemed to me, that shouldn't be the debate. The debate should be why are we doing it and get into the remembering part of it."

Last week Hardeman had introduced a bill entitled Respect for Veterans to address the problem with the Poppy boxes. In order to ensure that it was accomplished before Remembrance Day he withdrew the Bill Thursday and instead brought forward the motion.

"I think it's very important the fact that we all do our part on to remember on Remembrance Day what it's all about and obviously the poppy is the symbol of remembering the sacrifices made by the solider who in fact gave us the society that we presently live and I think even more so gave us the type of democracy and the type of governance that we have."
