Pottahawk Sunday

OPP asking party-goers to follow the rules

NORFOLK COUNTY - The waters of Lake Erie will be busy this weekend as boaters travel to Pottahawk Point.

Norfolk OPP Constable, Ed Sanchuk says police will be on patrol and helping to make it a safe day for everyone. "The Norfolk County OPP is urging all boating enthusiasts not to pick up individuals looking for a ride to Pottahawk. Officers in uniform and plain clothes will be at marinas working with marina owners to ensure that this is not occurring and will be enforcing the Trespass to Property Act and we will have a zero tolerance."

Sanchuk also highlights a few tips police are offering to boaters before they head out this weekend. "Be prepared to wear a life jacket or PFD at all times while boating, it's too late to put on a life jacket after you fall in the water.  Do not operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, it's against the law and carries the same penalties as if you were driving your vehicle.  Conduct a pre-departure check list for all required safety equipment. Safety equipment is required by law and may save your life.  And check the weather forecast before leaving the dock. Weather can turn enjoyment into tragedy."

He also encourages boaters carry a communication device, such as a cell phone with a charger or VHF radio in the case you need to call for help.

Sanchuk says the majority of the incidents that have occurred at past Pottahawk’s have involved alcohol and people left stranded without a ride back to shore.
