PRISM is designed for 2SLGBTQ+ identifying youth to connect with adults that can help them along their journey.
OXFORD - A program supporting 2SLGBTQ+ youth is in need of volunteers.
Big Brothers Big Sisters in Oxford County has offered the PRISM program - which stands for Pride, Respect, Identity, Safety and Mentoring - for just over three years. It is designed for 2SLGBTQ+ identifying children and youth to connect with adults that can help them along their journey.
Amanda Smythe, PRISM program coordinator explains why the youth need these volunteers.
"A lot of 2SLGBTQ youth can sometimes struggle to find connection within the community. The incentive is to create that connection, give [the youth] a place to be authentically themselves and have a safe journey with an adult mentor or in group programs with other 2SLGBTQ-identifying youth."
Smythe says they currently have 10 to 15 volunteers and 30 youth.
You can sign-up to volunteer here. Smythe also says she encourages anyone to call or come to their offices and follow them on socials.
Amanda Smythe stopped by the studio to have a chat with Matt about PRISM, and you can find the full interview below.
