Oxford OPP are warning the public about another scam making the rounds in the area.
Oxford OPP are warning the public about the popular Publishers Clearing House scam that is making the rounds in the region.
How it works is you will get a letter in the mail saying you have won a large amount of cash. Sometimes they will send you a phony cheque or ask you to call a number to discuss the payment. This is a scam and a number of people in Oxford County have reported receiving these letters in the past week.
The letters look all too official and this recent scam has a cheque from AVIVA Canada in excess of $12,000 included in the mailing. AVIVA Canada issued a public warning back in September 2015 confirming that this is a scam. Here is the link to the warning issued from AVIVA Canada. https://www.avivacanada.com/sites/default/files/Aviva-Sept2015-Scam-Alert.pdf
Don’t become a statistic. Fraud is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that will only stop when the scammers stop getting money, banking information or personal information. The best thing to do is to simply hang up the phone or save the letter to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
For more information on fraud, call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
