Eight purple benches will be installed throughout Oxford County to shine a light on gender-based violence.
OXFORD COUNTY - A national campaign is making its way to Oxford County.
The Purple Bench campaign started in Nova Scotia, where a woman in an abusive relationship went and sat on park benches as a way to get space. As a result, her family began the campaign to raise awareness of gender-based violence.
DASO's Fundraising and Communications Coordinator, Sophie Foster on what Oxford County is doing.
"The campaign is basically being put together collaboratively between DASO, Ingamo and DART. Basically, it is an initiative, we want to raise more awareness and hopefully prevent gender-based violence as well."
Foster says eight benches will be installed throughout Oxford County including Woodstock, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, East-Zorra Tavistock, Norwich, Blandford-Blenheim, South-West Oxford, and Zorra.
"They should be hopefully installed in the next couple of weeks. Once they are installed we will be doing a 10 to 15 minute unveiling."
Foster says each of the benches and plaques that will be on them have been generously donated by Maglin, and each bench will be a resource for those in need as well as a tool to raise awareness about the issue of gender-based violence.
