Woodstock native and NHL linesman Brad Kovachik is packed and ready to leave for Sochi to officiate Men's Hockey.
Bigger ice, different sight lines, and a faster pace game are all things NHL linesman Brad Kovachik is preparing for in Sochi.
The Woodstock native leaves from New York bound for Russia on Sunday along with the other NHL officials, players and media staff.
Kovachik says he will be using his travel time to prepare. "As far as hockey goes, we received three different rule books. There's a few tweaks in the rules from the NHL compared to the International Ice Hockey, so we'll have a nice eleven hour flight to go over those books, read those and get studied up on the new rules and everything. Off the ice they just told us to be prepared, obviously it's not going to be like the Vancouver Olympics or Salt Lake City where it is in North America. It's in Russia and everyone knows, if you've listened to the news recently, that there's threats over there so just be prepared, be diligent, be aware of where you are and your surroundings and I'm sure everything will be okay."
The chances of Kovachik officiating one of Canada's men's hockey games is good however they will not know their schedule until they meet Tuesday morning.
He added that his performance in the first week would determine if he would get the opportunity to participate in a quarter-finals, semi-finals or finals match.
During his off time at the Winter Games, Kovachik plans on taking in some of the Olympic action. "Where we're staying is right in Coastal Cluster it's called and I guess that's where all the skating events will take part; figure skating, speed skating and curling and all those things. We're going to be getting some days off while we are there so hopefully we'll take in a couple of events during that time."
