Record Setting Quarter Matching for Food for Friends

Over $15,000 was raised this year at the quarter matching program for Food for Friends.

WOODSTOCK - The Food for Friends Quarter matching program raised over $15,000 this year.

Sobey's Corporate matched all of the quarter donations over thanksgiving at the Foodland stores in Ingersoll and Woodstock and the Sobey's in Woodstock. All of the money raised will go towards Operation Sharing's Food for Friends program. Food for Friends allows the less fortunate in our community to go grocery shopping using a prepaid card where they can choose their own food, as opposed to taking what is given to them from the Foodbank.

Owner, Operator of the Foodland in Woodstock Chris Chapman explains why they continue to support Food for Friends.

"I think this is a terrific program, it is innovative, it goes one step beyond the traditional food bank concept. At the traditional food bank, the people in need come and they get whatever people have donated which tends to be peanut butter, Mac and cheese and things like that. With Food for Friends, they are given a food bank card, which allows them to come and buy non taxable items that they want, so they can put together a meal plan that they will want, rather than what somebody has cleaned out of their cupboard at home."

Chapman says Food for Friends allows the less fortunate to grocery shop with dignity.

"It's treats people with dignity, allows them to learn how to become integrated shoppers in society and that's great too. We have been doing this for a number of years now and I think Woodstock should be very proud of the program Operation Sharing has put together to help people in need in our community."

This is the highest total ever for the quarter matching program in Oxford County.
