Rogue Shopping Carts Remain A Concern

An update on abandoned shopping carts does not look promising as complaints continue to roll in from around the Friendly City.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council will be given an update on the abandoned shopping cart issue on Thursday night.

Several residents have complained to the city after having shopping carts show up on their front lawns or in public parks and other locations. Mayor Trevor Birtch tells Heart FM they have been monitoring the situation over the past 6 months and will get an update on Thursday.

"The past 6 months the City has been monitoring the situation and have been in contact again with the some of the store owners and council is going to see a report that shows that things are still needing improvement."

Birtch says the city will continue to monitor the issue and look for more direction in the future.

"We looked at what some of the potential sticks we could use per say to pass the cost onto the stores and I know it was something council wanted to be very cautious on and we will see, given time, if people's positions change on that matter."

Birtch says they have been getting these complaints for over a year now.

"Shopping carts that get left on a front lawn or a public park so it's people who are getting their goods or groceries home from the store, utilizing that shopping cart, but not taking it back on their next visit and leaving it in an unsightly place."
