Addiction Services of Thames Valley is reminding people to have a safe and smart New Years
It's New Years Eve and lots of people out there are planning on kicking off 2018 with some drinks.
Addictions Services of Thames Valley would like to take this opportunity remind people out there about the dangers of consuming too much alcohol.
Christine Garinger is a Coordinator of their Community Withdrawal and Support Program and is also a Registered Nurse
She says binge drinking can have negative effects on your body.
"It's hard on your liver, it's hard on your brain and all of your systems. It can give you a nasty hangover the next day; that's basically withdrawal that you're going through when you do over indulge."
Drinking too much booze can also cloud your judgment, making you do things you wouldn't normally think of.
Garinger talks about the low risk drinking guidelines from the Canadian Centre of Substance Abuse.
"For men, it's a little bit different than women because of our physical body differences. For men on a special occasion the recommendation is to not have more than four drinks, for women it's not more than three."
Here is what is classified as one drink;
- One 12oz bottle of beer or cooler with 5 percent alcohol content.
- One 5oz glass of wine with 12 percent alcohol content.
- One 1.5oz shot of hard liqour with 40 percent alcohol content.
