Mark Schadenberg will be stepping up as the Acting Mayor for the City of Woodstock, a role that was previously filled by the late Ron Fraser.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council opened on Thursday with a special tribute to Ron Fraser.
Fraser recently passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. He served as a police officer for 34 years, before retiring as the Woodstock Police Chief in 2009. Fraser was currently serving his 6th year on Woodstock City Council when he tragically passed away on Sunday April 4th.
One order of business City Council did have to go over was to name a new acting Mayor.
Mark Schadenberg was selected for the position. He previously served as acting mayor in 2020 and explains his new role.
"It really is just in case the Mayor is out of town or not able to attend an event or chair an event that the acting mayor has to step in. One kick example, we had a City Council last year where the Mayor wanted to second a motion and he couldn't do it without stepping off the chair to do so."
Under normal circumstances the Acting Mayor would be called upon to fill in at various events or ribbon cuttings if the Mayor was out of town or unable to attend. Of course we haven't had too many of those since the start of the pandemic last March.
Schadenberg was selected for the position after being nominated by councillors Connie Lauder and Deb Tait.
Council still hasn't made a decision on what they will do to fill the seat left vacant by Fraser's passing. They do have a few options to choose from to fill the seat, including a by-election or having council appoint someone. Council could also choose to appoint the person who had the most votes in the last election without winning a seat. In Woodstock, that would Kate Leatherbarrow.
