Second Reading Pass

MPP Ernie Hardeman poses with John Gignac, uncle of the late OPP Constable Laurie Hawkins.

Hawkins Gignac Act passes second reading again in Ontario Legislature

Ernie Hardeman isn't giving up on a private members bill asking that carbon monoxide detectors become mandatory in all Ontario homes.

The local MPP brought forth the Hawkins Gignac Act for second reading in the legislature again this afternoon.

It is named after Richard and Laurie Hawkins (nee Gignac) and their children who were tragically killed by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Hardeman says it's not just those in a home who have fallen sick to carbon monoxide that run the risk of injury.

"The Ontario Professional Firefighers Association has even brought to my attention the added benefit of this bill for this bill for Ontario firefighters and medical personnel. Image a 911 call comes in because someone is unconscious when the emergency personnel arrive they have no reason to suspect carbon monoxide poisoning without the alarm from a functioning CO detector."

Hardeman says since the tragedy in Woodstock, many municipal bylaws have been passed around carbon monoxide detectors.

"The municipalities are taking a step in the right direction but a handful of municipalities are not enough. Do we only want Ontario families to have protection from Carbon Monoxide if they live in certain towns? Even with the efforts of these municipalities over 250 Ontarians have perished from carbon monoxide poisoning in the last 15 years."

Members of the 1st Ingersoll Girl Guides were on hand at Queen's Park today to show support for the bill. Earlier this year the troop experienced their own scare in a cabin near Princeton when their CO detector went off discovering a leaky stove pipe.

The bill passed second reading and Hardeman hopes it will be up for third reading and royal assent before Christmas.
