A 69 year old woman from Woodstock is out thousands of dollars after falling victim to a romance scam.
Police say the victim met the scammer online and developed a relationship over 6 months via YouTube email and phone calls. The relationship lead to the victim sending wire transfers and cheques totaling $30,000 and changing their Will to include the scammer as a beneficiary.

They claim to work for a legitimate company called, "hired" and told the victim the job entailed accepting e-transfers from the company. The victim was told to withdraw the amount transferred from their personal bank account and deposit it to a specific QR code at a Bitcoin ATM.
Woodstock Police are also looking into several reports of counterfeit money be distributed locally.
Over the weekend, a local person was duped by the fake money. They were selling a phone through Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace. The buyer paid for the phone with counterfeit bills.
