Reports say the singer died on Tuesday night

Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has died at the age of 56.

According to a statement from her family, she passed away last night.

A cause of death has not been released.

O'Connor's breakthrough came in 1990 with the release of her second album "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got."

The album contains her biggest hit to date, a cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U."

She went on to release eight more albums.

During her career, she was no stranger to controversy.

In 1992, she made headlines for ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a "Saturday Night Live" performance, in a protest against child abuse by the Catholic church.

O'Connor, who was outspoken about her decades long battle with mental health, recently announced plans to release a new album next year.

She is survived by three children.

Last year, her 17 year old son Shane died by suicide.
