The Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation into WPS officers after a 21 year old man suffered serious injuries during an arrest last month.
WOODSTOCK - The Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation involving Woodstock Police Officers.
The investigation was launched after a 21 year old man suffered serious injuries last month. The man was arrested by officers for public intoxication outside a home on February 28th. After being placed in the cruiser, the man starting banging his head on the partition. This caused the man to suffer from a fractured left finger and cuts to his face.
SIU Director Joseph Martino explains why they terminated the investigation.
“Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, I am satisfied at this time that there is patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer is concerned in connection with the man’s injury. Whether the fractured finger was sustained before the arrival of police, or in the cruiser as he struck the interior of the vehicle, the man is alone responsible for his injury. Accordingly, the investigation is hereby discontinued and the file is closed.”
The SIU will do an investigation anytime there is an injury related to an arrest.
