Oxford County Public Health and Emergency Services would like to see more smoke free apartment buildings in our area.
WOODSTOCK - Smoke free buildings can improve your health and prevent a dangerous fire.
Oxford County Public Health and Emergency Services are encouraging apartment building residents to push for smoke free housing. Tobacco Control Coordinator Gemma Urbani explains.
"Well it also reduces the cost of overturning a unit after a smoking tenant moves out. That is usually the number one thing for private sector landlords is that it actually reduces their cost, not to mention they'll see the health benefits."
Smoke-free housing not only promotes tenant health, but reduces the risk of fire, as tobacco materials are the #1 ignition source of all fatal residential fires. From 1998 to 2017, there have been 600 fires caused by cigarettes annually. This means that smoke-free housing can save lives by reducing the risk of second-hand smoke related disease, and reducing the risk of fire.
Smoke-free housing can help:
· Save money on cleaning fees
· Promote a healthy lifestyle
· Reduce insurance costs
· Prevent a dangerous fire
