Snowmobile Safety Tips from Oxford OPP

Photo submitted by Oxford OPP

Motorized Snowmobile Safety Week starts on February 9th and ends on February 16th.

OXFORD - Lots of snowmobilers have been taking advantage of all of the snow we've been getting this year.

Today marks the first day of Motorized Snowmobile Safety Week and the OPP has some tips to make sure everyone is safe out there.

Make sure you wear a helmet and appropriate clothing, have a fully charged cellphone with you when you leave, let someone know you're intended route, stick to the OFSC trails, obey the speed limits, and remember that no ice is safe ice when it comes to frozen waterways. You also shouldn't be riding while impaired, tired, or distracted.

You should have a small safety kit on you whenever you head out. It should have waterproof matches, a pocketknife, a compass, a whistle, ice picks and a first aid kit. If you are a new or inexperienced rider, it might be a good idea to take a snowmobile safety course beforehand.

The OPP has reported three snowmobile fatalities in the West Region so far this winter; one in South Bruce, one in Brant County, and a 14-year-old in Oxford County on Saturday January 31st.
