People looking to get out and get active will have a new app at their fingertips in the very near future. This morning, officials from TecVana Corp. gave a demonstration of their new Geo Adventure smartphone app. Oxford County has partnered with TecVana to be one of their pilot sites for the new app. Guiding the demonstration was Mariko Izumi, host of WFN's Hookin' Up with Mariko Izumi. "Geo adventuring through TecVana is all about bridging the rural and urban divide. So as we know, a lot of people, especially my generation, are moving out to the cities. This app encourages you to get outside of your comfort zone and create and partake in adventures." Mariko's father, Wayne Izumi (bottom photo), longtime host of Reel Fishing Radio says the app started out as a way to get more kids into fishing, and expanded into the outdoors in general. He hopes the app will help younger generations bridge the gap between the virtual world, and the real world. "They're on their Playstations and their smartphones and they seem to get obsessed with it and they don't get outdoors. Remember the old days when kids were outside all the time? That's changed." Warden Don McKay thinks the app will be a hit with smartphone users of all ages in Oxford and beyond. "It's certainly going to give more people an awareness of all that's available in Oxford County. This app will allow more people to say 'What's going on?', and the information will come to them. Anything we can do to encourage people's social, mental and physical health and well being is going to be beneficial. This app does all of that as well as driving the tourism and economic development piece for us." The app should be available for download sometime in early September.
