Emotional night for 19 Oxford County students graduating from School Within a College program.
WOODSTOCK - It's been an incredible turn of events for 19 Oxford County students who received high school diplomas Tuesday.
The students were part of the first ever School Within a College or SWAC program in Oxford County .
Head Instructor Sean Mattys says it's a program for students who are at risk of not graduating high school.
"Using the carrot of having up to four free college courses, which the students can take and then the rest of their highschool education they complete via my instruction in this incredible space we have here at the Fanshawe Campus here in Woodstock."
Mattys says the program has exceeded all of his expectations.
"These were students who at the beginning of the year, could never envision walking across the stage so our program really changes lives. Of our class, the vast majority are going on to post secondary next year."
Mattys says the program is funded through the Ministry of Education.
"It's something called School College Work Initiative. It's a specialized program which is intent on giving students specialized training so that's where our funding comes from to allow these students to take college level courses."
Mattys says the majority of the students were either close to, or already removed from their high school when they came to the SWAC program.
Matty says two other students are on the verge of finishing their credits.
