Teacher Honoured at Farm Show

It's Day 2 of Canada's Outdoor Farm Show in north Woodstock. And the show is always a popular place to visit for student groups who are studying agriculture. But one class from Ridgetown saw their teacher honoured at the show on Tuesday. Elsa Natvik, a high school teacher received the 4th annual Teacher Recognition Award for going above and beyond to promote agriculture in the classroom. Natvik (in photo on right) explains what she does with her students (Grades 10-12). "We take the kids out and they visit different industries, we give them certifications. They've taken the grower/pesticides course. They've gone to grain elevators, they've gone to pig farms, cattle farms, dairy farms..." Colleen Smith, Executive Director of Ontario Agrifood Education presented the award, and told the crowd how Natvik's outside the classroom approach has impacted her students. "A student said that she's given them a whole new perspective on the ag sector. Before this program, none of them had an idea of where their food came from and the program simply wouldn't have happened without Mrs. Natvik." The Outdoor Farm Show continues until 5 o'clock today, and picks back up for one final day Thursday.
