Tell Walker to Take a Leap on Leap Day

Tell Walker to take a Leap on Leap Day is an event hosted by the Oxford People Against the Landfill or OPAL Alliance.

NGERSOLL - Tell Walker to take a Leap on Leap Day is an event hosted by the Oxford People Against the Landfill or OPAL Alliance.

It's happening this Saturday the 29th, Leap Day and the event will feature live music, information, solidarity and action. They will have live performances from the Movin’ Groovin’ and Verhoeven, The McKay Family, Margo Does with Dan Rutledge and Doug Long, Ted Comiskey and Friends, Leanne Mayer, Jim Gonder, Ian McNally and Chris Strei and Kiley Joe Masson.

OPAL member Bryan Smith says they have been fighting the proposed landfill from moving into Oxford for 8 years now.

"We are 8 years into a process that would have normally ended by now. Walker has a way to delay the process, one of their delays, is that they have documents that they need to send to the Minister where they will argue, pointlessly mind you, they will argue that a dump can be done safely. So that hasn't been done yet, they haven't released them to the Ministry, they haven't released them to the public, they haven't released them to the municipalities and other affected people to have a look at. So that is yet to come, on the other hand, we have had five scientists tell us that it is unworkable. So we are still on a holding pattern, but during that holding pattern, I think we need to celebrate the successes we have had in holding them off and so one of the ways you can celebrate is with great music and that is why we are inviting all these great musicians in."

Smith says it promises to be a fun event and they are hoping to garner more support from the community.

"We are going to have a great day of music and we will have lot's of other things for people to see do and enjoy and our plan is by the end of the day, we will have lot's and lot's of people who will have persuaded the Minister of Environment that he should be saying no to this dump."

Every Friday OPAL Alliance members spend a half an hour at different spots in the County waving signs, opposing the landfill and they have fighting the proposed dump since 2012.

The event is happening from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Ingersoll Pipe Band Hall.
