Thames River Wetlands Beachville Restoration Project

The Thames River Wetlands Beachville Restoration Project is green and prospering after a year and a half of work.

BEACHVILLE - The Thames River Wetlands Beachville Restoration Project is green and prospering after a year and a half of work. In 2013 Oxford County, Stewardship of Oxford, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and the Ministry of Natural Resources partnered on the project. Together they have restored about 260 acres of floodplain land between Beachville and Woodstock. Vice Chair of Stewardship Oxford Phil Holt tells Heart FM they have been doing a lot of work rehabilitating the area to it's natural state with tall grass planting, reforestation, wetland creation and natural habitat creation. Already the area is starting to welcome an entire new generation of wildlife including monarch butterflies, bees, snapping turtles, painted turtles, ducks, geese and migrating birds. He adds they have also been planting trees with the help of public school students from Ingersoll and Woodstock. The idea is to create a conservation on the flood plain and create a natural habitat for wild animals and birds. Holt adds the western portion of the property has been developed by the Oxford County Trails Council with the Construction of a trail that could be open to the public in the future.
