OXFORD/ELGIN - A virtual hub for youth, created by youth is available every Thursday through Wellkin Child and Youth Mental Wellness.
17 year old Sydney Vandenhoek and Serenity Henry created the program. Sydney says every Thursday they meet online in a safe space where youth can practice wellness.
"The first hour is a wellness webinar, we have guest speakers and community partners come in and talk about wellness in different aspects. One night we had yoga, one night we had journaling, so just different things to help. The second hour is more of a social aspect of it. We have games that we facilitate and just trying to get people to be social and have fun for that last hour."
Every week consists of a wellness activity or information session, presented by Wellkin staff or a community partner, with topics ranging from yoga to employment rights, journaling to LGBTQ2S+ resources and more.
Syndey says she thinks all youth would benefit from joining in.
"The word wellness is thrown around a lot but it has different meanings for everyone and practicing wellness is extremely beneficial and it helps with your mental wellness and that is what we are trying to aim for."
The program was made available thanks to funding from the RBC Future Launch Challenge and the support of the Oxford Community Foundation.
"The Hub" is available for free to all Oxford and Elgin youth aged 13-25 years old through the virtual platform Zoom every Thursday evening from 3:30-5:30 PM. Youth can learn more about "The Hub" and register here: https://wellkin.ca/programs_services/the-hub/
