The town of Tillsonburg will be matching Red Cross donations for Fort McMurray.
TILLSONBURG - The town of Tillsonburg is doing its part to help the fire stricken city of Fort McMurray. Mayor Stephen Molnar told County Council the town will be matching donations up to $5,000.
Molnar explains how the process will work.
"Come to our Customer Service Centre at 10 Lisgar Ave in Tillsonburg; make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross. Up to $5,000 as previously committed to by council will be matched on a dollar for dollar basis to that limit and then the federal government will ultimately match that."
Molnar adds this isn't the first time Tillsonburg has lent a hand during times of devastation around the world.
"We have a history of reaching out to areas when they're ice storms in Quebec or there's flooding in New Orleans or tsunamis in Asia. We've run a similar program, I think people of our community have always looked broader than their boarders to say that we're all neighbours and this is our way of giving back."
It has been a week since the entire city in Alberta was evacuated due to a massive wildfire. Since then lots of people nationwide have been trying to help.
Molnar applauds everyone who has tried to help the cause.
"We're thousands of miles away from some of these things but it's a very small world and I think people take responsibility and understand not just that sometimes things can also happen here, but these are our neighbours. It's a small world and I would congratulate especially those individuals and groups on a grassroots level that show that initiative."
