What would have been the first day of a labour action by local high school teachers, is now the first day of a tentative deal. The Thames Valley District School Board and Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation reached the tentative deal after a marathon of bargaining sessions over the weekend. TVDSB Chair Joyce Bennett said in a release that "We of course want what's best for our students and staff, and I think getting this tentative agreement on the eve of sanctions is wonderful". According to TVDSB Director, Bill Tucker, the tentative agreement should meet the financial constraints established by the provincial government. "This tentative agreement was developed within challenging parameters, but I believe it is a deal that is still good for student achievements". Teachers are in a legal strike position and were set to begin sanctions against the board this morning. The agreement is now subject to approval by the Minister of Education, will be presented to the TVDSB Trustees on Tuesday night.
