People over the age of 40 will be able to receive the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in Ontario and Alberta starting tomorrow.
ONTARIO/ALBERTA - Ontario and Alberta have both decided to lower the age limit for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
Starting tomorrow, people 40 and over will be able to get the shot.
This is going against the National Advisory Committee on Immunization's recommendation. It says the vaccine should only be given to those 55 and older due to a slightly elevated risk of an extremely rare blood clot disorder. Only two cases of vaccine related blood clots have been reported in Canada so far and they're both recovering.
Federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu says the committee is currently reviewing it's guidance and it's expected to provide an updated recommendation in the near future.
Health Canada has licensed the AstraZeneca shot for use in people over the age of 18.
