Southwestern Public Health is preparing for another shipment of COVID-19 vaccines this week.
OXFORD/ELGIN - Southwestern Public Health expects to receive vaccine doses this week.
Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock the shots will be available to residents and staff of local retirement and long term care homes.
"First dose vaccinations are available at the Agriplex in London for Long Term Care and Retirement Home staff and essential caregivers and that is for those who have been identified by those homes."
Dr. Lock says they will turn away people, if you are not on the list.
"Only those on the list provided by the homes to the Agriplex will get the vaccine. This is an important detail. If you are not on the list at the Agriplex, you will be turned away. So work with your local retirement or long term care home, if you need to get on that list."
Dr. Lock says they are preparing for mass vaccinations.
"There is still only a limited supply of vaccines available across Ontario but despite this, mass immunization planning is well underway at Southwestern Public Health for when get more vaccine. So those who are 80 years old and older will be vaccinated first, as we know the most serious impacts of COVID are on our older adults and that they are at risk for needing hospitalization and are at a greater risk for dying."
Dr. Lock says the earliest we could expect seniors outside of retirement homes to get a vaccine is the second week of March.
