Woodstock-Oxford Rotary is about to send two containers of school supplies to the Philippines to help get students back to class.
TILLSONBURG - School supplies from Oxford County will be going to the Philippines to help children in need.
Rotary member Doug Vincent says they are loading extra school supplies into a couple of containers to help students in the Philippines who are still struggling to find a sense of normalcy after the devastating effects of Typhoon Hiayan.
"The classrooms are not safe to be in so the children are crammed in other quarters. Some of them are meeting in storage rooms, some are meeting outside. So our Woodstock-Oxford Rotary group along with other groups in the area are working to rehabilitate 5 schools so the kids can get back to their studies."
Vincent sends a big thank you to the TVDSB for their part in this initiative.
"It's wonderful that the board of education is cooperating with Rotary to let us have access to the extra furniture and surplus desks and chairs that will be packed in this container, and all for the sake of humankind and to have the young people return to their proper school classrooms once again."
Around 30 volunteers are needed to help the Rotary club and other organizations from our area load the two containers at Maple Lane Public School according to Vincent.
"The school that closed in Tillsonburg will be where we're loading a container on May the 7th. So we're looking for volunteer help to help us load those containers on that day."
They are also looking for people who can volunteer some time on the Friday beforehand to help prepare some of the supplies so they can be loaded into the containers easier.
