The Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners is looking to recruit more than 20 volunteers for its recreation programs in Oxford County.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners is in desperate need of volunteers, especially in Oxford County.
Manager of Volunteer Engagement Megan Fife says they're looking to recruit over 20 new volunteers for the recreation programs in our area.
"We have a group recreation program called The Social that takes place a couple of times a week. Volunteers come in and you're in a group setting. You would do games, baking, and arts and crafts with the clients alongside our facilitators."
Anyone over the age of 16 can apply to volunteer for the program, but it's a three-month commitment with four hours, once a week.
Fife says they also offer an In-Home Recreation Program.
"Volunteers are matched one-to-one with a client and they provide home visits where you would do rec and leisure activities with them. You could play a board game, go for a walk, or play some cards. It really is just a great time to spend with one of our clients."
Volunteers for this program have to be at least 18 years old and they need to commit to 12 visits total. It could be one weekly visit over 12 weeks or two visits a week over six weeks.
All volunteers, whether it's for the In-Home Recreation Program or The Social, have to go through an interview process and a vulnerable sector check. They will also receive dementia education and therapeutic recreation training.
Those interested in learning more can visit the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners office located at 575 Peel Street in Woodstock. More information can also be found on their website online here.
January is also Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and Fife called the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Tuesday January 23rd. You can listen to the full interview below:
