Waste Reduction Week In Oxford

County officials would like to see residents produce less waste this week.

OXFORD COUNTY - It's Waste Reduction Week in Oxford County.

Future Oxford Board Member Brian Smith says there's two parts to the message they're hoping to get out there.

"One is we should really be celebrating the amazing successes that are happening around Oxford County and all of the groups that are contributing to it; individuals, groups and businesses. The other thing is we need to share those ideas."

The county has a lot of events planned all week long, to coincide with Canada's Waste Reduction Week theme days.

Monday October 15th - Waste Reduction Week Launch Event
Oxford County Waste Management & Education Centre
384060 Salford Rd, Salford
Opening remarks at 10 a.m.
Open house from 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday October 16th - Textiles
Tillsonburg Minor Hockey will be donating up to 500 old sports jerseys to Diabetes Canada.

Wednesday October 17th - Celebrating Champions and Innovators
Local groups will be honoured for their efforts in hosting low waste events like the Canterbury Folk Festival, Canada's Outdoor Farm Show and the Lions Club Fish Fry.

Thursday October 18th - Plastics and Packaging
Students from College Avenue Secondary School will be touring the Oxford County Waste Management & Education Centre in Salford. They will be able to learn more about waste diversion and the net zero facility.

Friday October 19th - Food Waste
Oxford County is encouraging people to take the food waste pledge and prevent your food from becoming waste.

Saturday October 20th and Sunday October 21st - Hazardous waste & e-waste
County officials would like residents to safety dispose of hazardous household waste items including batteries, fluorescent lights, aerosol cans and paint.

Saturday October 20th and Sunday October 21st - Swap, Share, Repair
Extend the material life cycles of your products repairing or swapping and sharing with friends.

Smith says they will also be collecting old cellphones this week.

"People's excess cellphones can be turned in. They will be wiped and reprogrammed by the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) so people with visual impairments can use them and it will be helping those people with things we could otherwise throw away."

Throughout the week, residents are welcome to share a photo of their waste reduction efforts online on Facebook or Twitter using #WasteReductionWeek. If they tag @OxfordCounty as well, they will be entered to win one of four green cones.
