Whooping Cough on the Rise

Incidence of Whooping Cough, or Pertussis, is on the rise in Oxford County. Public Health investigated six reported cases in April, and there have been a dozen so far this year. Pertussis presents a serious health risk to children under one year of age and pregnant women. It begins with cold-like symptoms, but develops into persistent coughing spells that can last for up to two months. Immunization is the best protection against Pertussis. Contact your health care provider if you think you may have whooping cough or if you need to be immunized against it.
