Woodstock Cheerleaders Finish 4th at Winterfest

Woodstock Cheerleaders finished 4th at Winterfest in St. Catharines, as they get set for Provincials next month.

WOODSTOCK - A team of Cheerleaders from Woodstock finished 4th at the annual Winterfest Competition in St. Catharines.

The girls from Woodstock Cheer were competing in the Division Youth for ages of 5-11. Owner of Woodstock Cheer Abbey Girard says it is amazing what these kids are accomplishing at a young age.

"Some of the most challenging moves they were doing is called stunting, stunting is brand new to them and it is one of the most important things in cheerleading, so that is where they are going to be lifting their other teammates. It is really great to do this in a team setting because we are teaching the girls to lift each other up and work as a team."

The team is made up of girls from Woodstock, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg with a couple even coming from Norfolk County. Girard says they do there training at Cowan Park and Winterfest was actually their first competition.

"Winterfest is one of the smallest competitions that Cheer Evolution does, it is done to prepare the teams for the upcoming championships. So the girls go, they do their routine, it is there first chance to perform and then to get all the legal stuff out of the way for the routine because they have plenty of rules in All Star Cheerleading."

It was the Woodstock Cheer All Star Whiteouts team that finished 4th this weekend. The Woodstock Cheer Club Flurries also competed and had a great showing. Both teams from Woodstock are currently training for the Ontario Championships in Kitchener at the Aud on February 15-17th, with Nationals coming up in April.
