Some of the best soup Oxford County has to offer was on display at the 5th annual SoupStock.
WOODSTOCK - A packed house enjoyed some of the best soup Oxford County has to offer at the 5th annual Soup Stock today.
All of the money raised from the event will go towards the Domestic Abuse Services Oxford or DASO. Since they started doing Soupstock the event has raised over $25,000 and they are hopeful today's event raised somewhere between $6,000 - $8,000. Executive Director Rhonda Hendel tells Heart FM what the money raised today will go towards.
"Our most high profile program that people seem to know best is our 21 bed shelter for women and shelter impacted by domestic abuse and or homelessness, we also do sexual assault counselling, counselling groups, transitional programming, the money from today will go towards our transitional support program, which helps woman in our community, it will also be used at Christmas time, because we always tend to get more people in at Christmas time."
She also wanted to thank Scotiabank for matching all of the ticket sales and being the main sponsor of the event. Hendel says the shelter has been around since 1974 and it is was on the first woman's shelters in Canada.
"And since then over 15,000 woman and children have used our services, so on an average year we are looking at about 200 women and children in the shelter, another 1000 in our community based programs, so we deal with a large number of woman on a yearly basis."
11 local restaurants served up their best soup today and the winning soup came from the Ody's restaurant located inside the Quality Suites and Hotel. Placing 2nd this year was the Elm Hurst Inn and 3rd place was a tie between Southgate and Sally Creek.
