The Woodstock Oxford Minor Basketball Association were the big winners on Thursday evening.
WOODSTOCK - Five groups and associations were given a little hardware by the City to congratulate them on their floats from the Victoria Day Parade. The big winner from the special day was the Woodstock Oxford Minor Basketball Association by winning 2 awards, one in Business and Commerce, and the other being the Grand Champions. Mayor of Woodstock, Trevor Birtch, was pleased with how much thought went into preparing floats to make Woodstock's Parade really stand out. "The citizens put so much time and effort into making it a great event each year. Council recognizes various categories from schools, business, service clubs, recreation, and community service it was a chance to thank them personally, give them a special plaque so they remember why they put all that work into a great event."
Mayor Birtch also knows why it is important to acknowledge these groups from the parade. "It lets them know that from an official level here at the city we understand the volunteerism and what they do makes an impact here, for our whole community." Each year city council awards the best floats with a plaque and Birtch added that moving forward to 2016 they are going to encourage as many floats as possible with a chance of council recognition on the line.
As the Woodstock Oxford Minor Basketball Association are still living on cloud 9 Mayor Birtch has social media to thank for the turnout at events such as parades that gives council the ability to hand out awards likes these. "I hope that we continue to grow and have even more success! It seems that especially with the onset of social media there are more and more people becoming aware of what is going on at events. I think that what we are going to continue to encourage as many as possible to get involved." Eastdale Public School, Woodstock Scouts, Cops and Rodder's Cruise for MD, and Don Mckay were the other recipients to be awarded a plaque for their contributions.
