He talked about his new role, tariffs, affordability, and the recent cases of Pride Flag vandalism in Oxford County.

OXFORD - The past few weeks have been very exciting for Arpan Khanna.

He celebrated his third anniversary as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Oxford on June 19th, just a few days after the House of Commons started its summer recess on June 16th. In his personal life, Khanna celebrated his fifth wedding anniversary with his wife Sim on July 2nd, and he celebrated his 36th birthday yesterday.

In the middle of all of this, Khanna was also appointed as the Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice and Attorney General of Canada on June 30th.

"It means more work and it's more of a national portfolio as well, but I think I'm excited! This is what I signed up for, to help Canadians across our country to make their lives better so this is one responsibility that I'm pretty excited to take on."

He says the Conservatives had some very important pieces of legislation during this past session of Parliament. Bailey's Law recently received Royal Assent, and it looks to make the murder of an intimate partner a first degree offence, if there is documentation of coercive or controlling behaviour. This bill is named after a woman who was killed in British Columbia, after her convicted ex-partner was let out on bail.

The Silver Alert Bill has also passed a second reading, so it will go to committee once the House of Commons resumes in the fall. It looks to create a national alert system to help locate vulnerable seniors who are missing, similar to the Amber Alert system.

On the topic of safety, we talked to Khanna about the recent cases of vandalism involving Pride Flags in Oxford County. We asked him if these acts should be considered as hate crimes and if local members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community should feel safe. This was his response.

"Everyone in Oxford County should be safe and respected of their background, who they love, what god they worship, or what they do. We have to be very clear of that; there is no room in Oxford County for any acts of vandalism, property damage or for targeting any one community. I know the OPP is investigating this, so I encourage anyone with any information to please contact the OPP and I hope those that are responsible are held accountable!"

During his interview on Heart FM this morning, Khanna also talked about affordability and how local businesses are being affected by tariffs and red tape.

It has been almost eight months since General Motors (GM) stopped production at CAMI in Ingersoll, which was a major loss for the community. Khanna says he has been pushing the Industry Minister about this, but has not received an official response. However, Khanna has been in contact with GM.

"There are some positive signs of possible new vehicles that might be brought in, but they are looking towards the government for a partnership and I hope that happens soon."
